Windsor Palms Care Center of Artesia Hosts Mental Health Awareness and Self-Care Event

The California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA) provides financial grant to Windsor Palms Care Center of Artesia enabling them to host mental health awareness and self-care event.

July 9, 2019 – Artesia, CA – Windsor Palms Care Center of Artesia, a short and long-term skilled nursing facility, through a financial grant provided by California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA) and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH), hosted a mental health awareness and self-care event for the greater-Artesia community and mental health care providers.

The event was created in order to bring awareness to mental health issues and the importance of self-care to underserved populations and individuals who do not typically seek services. The event was intended to break the stigma of mental illness and to share information about mental health.

The event included a range of speakers, including professionals from Windsor Palms who spoke about the importance of mental health awareness, a Registered Dietician who discussed the impact of diet and nutrition with mental health, two speakers from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization, and two speakers from College Hospital, Psychiatric Emergency Services. Community Mental Health and Social Service Agencies were also present to provide information and resources.

The event was organized by Windsor Palms’ Behavior Rehabilitation Program Director Tonantzin Martinez, Director of Business Development Dianne Rice, and Administrator James P. Hagar.

“Mental health, or mental illness, is often considered too taboo to discuss in the open,” says Hagar. “Many individuals deal with their mental health issues without seeking medical attention. They often feel too embarrassed to talk about it with others. The goal of this event was for everyone to meet and network, and to break the stigma of mental health challenges.”

More than 100 individuals from the community attended the event.
